That’s how the stress–vulnerability model works: it considers how much stress you’re dealing with, combined with how much stress you can cope with. Both are crucial in whether or not you become mentally unwell.

Unfortunately, there are so many things that cause stress: school commitments, falling out with friends, low self-esteem, pressures to succeed and be liked, physical injuries, harassment.

Also, not everyone reacts to things in the same way. Some people go to pieces when they’ve got loads of work and a looming deadline, others thrive under pressure. Some find a messy house unbearable, others don’t mind it at all, but are stressed by being made to clean up.

It also depends on how sensitive you are to problems and difficulties. Or how well your brain can process them.

We’ve all met people who make a drama out of every minor crisis. While some may just be exaggerating to gain attention, others may be experiencing powerful, confusing emotional reactions in response to seemingly minor issues, especially if their mental suitcase is already full.

Basically, we’re all vulnerable to mental health problems, but you’re even more vulnerable if your brain has a limited capacity to handle stress. Or produces overly powerful emotions. Or struggles to deal with unpleasant experiences.

You’re especially vulnerable if your brain does all those things. You know, like the typical teenage brain does.
